Ivy Style: Past And Present At New York’s FIT Museum

There has been no shortage of interest in ivy style (aka preppy style) since its inception in the early part of the 20th century. Although its popularity has been subject to fluctuation, it is viewed as a classic way of dressing that has become somewhat timeless.

With the success of such recent books as Preppy: Cultivating Ivy Style, Take Ivy and the soon to be released Ivy Style: Radical Conformists it is no wonder that The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York has put together Ivy Style an exhibition to celebrate the “Ivy League Look”.

The focus is almost exclusively on menswear dating from the early 20th century right up to the present, with more than 60 ensembles, both historic and contemporary, which are intermingled to illustrate the creation and subsequent reinterpretation of the style.

The exhibition will be on view from September 14, 2012, to January 5, 2013. The accompanying book also titled Ivy Style is edited by exhibition curator Patricia Mears and published by Yale University Press. For more information visit the FIT website.
