Julius Shulman (October 10, 1910 – July 15, 2009) offers us a selected view of Los Angeles culled from seven decades of images. With a life and career spanning nearly a century, this work includes some of the his most published photographs, and now for the first time many never-before-seen images of Los Angeles and its environs.
These photographic works show Los Angeles as a living organism both vibrant and volatile depending on the neighborhood with a tension most apparent in the documentation of the formerly emerging areas of Century City, Wilshire Boulevard, and Echo Park as well as other studies.
Many of the Los Angeles buildings and neighborhoods photographed by Shulman have since been torn down or otherwise transformed making these images some of the only lasting testaments to their existence.
With images from his personal collection as well as his official archives, Julius Shulman Los Angeles: The Birth of a Modern Metropolis represents not only lesser-known and never-before-seen material, but also some of Shulman’s personal favorites. Available April 5th 2011.
