In 2006 Taschen published the Peter Beard Art Edition, a two volume set that was limited to 2,250 copies and priced at $ 1,900. It quickly sold out and became a highly sought after collector’s item that now goes for several times that original amount.
This month Taschen has released a new one-volume hardcover edition for all those who couldn’t get their hands on that previous set. Packed into 770 pages are Peter Beard’s most important collages along with hundreds of smaller-scale works and diaries that have been magnified to show every detail of Beard’s mixed media works.
Born in New York City in 1938, Peter Beard began taking photographs and keeping diaries from an early age. By the time he graduated from Yale, he had developed a keen interest in Africa. Throughout the 1960s and ’70s he worked in Tsavo Park, the Aberdares, and Lake Rudolf in Kenya’s northern frontier. As a constant creator, Beard the chronicler photographs, writes, draws, collages and assembles a history of his life experiences and our own.
