Rediscovered Warhol To Be Offered At Christie’s In February

Just as Christie’s New York withdraws the Dennis Hopper Warhol (which sold for $302,500) from auction “As a result of a title claim” by his estranged wife, Christie’s London offers up a monumental 72 x 72in. (182.9 x 182.9cm.)  self portrait from 1967 estimated to fetch £3 million to £5 million at the Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Auction on February 16th 2011.

The self portrait is one of 11 made in this  large-scale format. Six works from this series were exhibited in the American Pavilion at the 1967 International and Universal Exposition in Montreal however, the present work is completely unpublished and has been in the same private collection since 1974. This self portrait will be exhibited in public for the first time at Christie’s New York (20 Rockefeller Plaza) from January 22-26  2011.
