Rothko’s No.1 (Royal Red and Blue) Leads Sotheby’s Evening Sale of Contemporary Art In November

One of the eight works hand-selected by Rothko for his landmark solo show in 1954 at the Art Institute of Chicago leads Sotheby’s Evening Sale of Contemporary Art In November.

Considering that most of the eight works from the 1954 show are either in museums or still in the possession of the Rothko children, the appearance of No.1 (Royal Red and Blue) at Sotheby’s is a major event that is sure to attract considerable attention and advance demand that is already categorized as insatiable.

Measuring a massive 113¾ x 67½ in (288.9 x 171.5 cm) the work is expected to sell for $35/50 million (before buyer’s premium). Along with Rothko other featured abstract expressionists in the sale will include Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Stilland and Willem de Kooning.

The canvas will be on view in New York beginning 1 November. The sale will take place on 13 November 2012.
